25th March 2011 - 22nd April 2011

25th March 2011 -
Today was the deadline for my book and essay. I felt that I did rush the end a little bit and that there were a few untied loose ends here and there, but nothing too detrimental. I hope.
One thing which I have been concentrating on this week was my book cover. I have been redesigning the whole cover again, except this time it has been informed and developed from the previous designs.

One of things which I have spent this week doing is messing around o photoshop trying to perfect my final piece. I am quite proud of how it looks and do think it is something which I could imagine being seen on a bookstores' shelves.
The cover which I have newly created features a photo which I have took. Well, one which my boyfriend helped me take. It is similar to the photo which I had used on the cover which I have shown Phil last week. After trying multiple poses I soon found one which wasn't too dramatic or melancholic.
Once I had taken the photo at the beginning of the week, Tuesday morning, I spent the afternoon changing the photo, something which I am unfamiliar with on photoshop, so that it no longer looked like me (because I think it would look a bit vain if I had just stuck a photo of myself on the front of the cover).
I changed the photo using the clone tool and by liquifying the photo. I also changed the hue and texture of the photo using filters. This meant that the photo looked a bit like it had been painted on photoshop.
Once I was happy with how my photo looked I decided that it was good enough to start to incorporate into a finished product.

Over the week I have been developing and changing parts of the cover to make it look a bit darker and more like a crime fiction novel. This has meant that the cover is now black instead of white, the author name is now larger and more dominant over the title of the book and that the cover now features colours of burnt, peachy orange and aquamarine. I thought this colour scheme would be quite different to other books in the genre whilst also coming quite close to the usual red, black and white colour scheme.
Elements which I have chosen to include from the previous design ideas include use of the same typeface and use of some of the background, although now the old background is being used as a subtle vertical section on the back of the cover which gives a bit of a break and interest from the block colour on the rest of the cover. I have used the part of the old background which included the coffee stain, except now I have changed the hue and saturation and brightness and contrast to make it black like the rest of the cover. I have also used the original background in the window of the photo I took. The tree in the corner has moved into the corner of the window.
Other things which I have added to this cover design is that I have added my own synopsis to the back which I've been meaning to do for a while now. I spontaneously added some larger letters at the beginning of each paragraph to give a bit more thought to the typography. These letters are also the deep peach colour found in other elements on the book cover.
I have enjoyed learning how to edit my own photo. I definitely have noticed the difference to using that instead of a generic stock image. I hope to use the skills I have learnt in other work. Maybe in perfecting my artwork or something.
However after this big push of work I think I'm going to try to relax this weekend before going home. Need to start progressing my website after that and begin HTML coding.
I think I also need to start looking at improving my method of work. Especially as I seem not to be doing what I mentally assign myself. This week, to motivate myself I have been writing lists on stickies on my Mac so that I know exactly what I need to do and therefore don't sit around wondering what tasks I need to complete instead of getting on with things. It has definitely helped a lot and I think that by having some kind of list at hand will definitely work as a motivational method in future projects. It also means that I can learn to be a bit more organised and learn to prioritise certain tasks over others. I was also able to incorporate things to do at the end of each list that I could do as a reward for completing the list. This was also a good motivator. I have also learnt that I am not spreading out the work enough. I am leaving a lot to the last minute to do, not through forgetfulness but bad planning so I think I need to either be using my Gantt chart a bit more often or I need to come up with my own method for getting certain parts of the project done at certain times. Maybe I could produce another chart to help me plan where I should be in a project at certain points.
15th April 2011 -
During the holidays I have been thinking about ways to improve my method of working. Whilst thinking about this I have came across an article on one of the blogs I read. The blog is called dumb little man and it is meant to be a blog for lifehacking/little ways to improve aspects of your life.
One of the articles which I came across was quite helpful. It was called "The Power of Tweaking".
The article is about finding variables in your life and monitoring them to affect change. Therefore, leading form this article I have decided this week to create a spreadsheet to monitor my daily and weekly progress for time spent working as I feel that this is something which I would like to monitor and improve.
The spreadsheet I have created started on the 13th of April, the day after creating the file. It monitors the hours which I have spent in the day doing University work or studying against hours which I have spent 'procrastinating' and doing other daily tasks. The aim of the spreadsheet is to keep an eye on these hours more closely and slowly improve them. Hopefully by 1% a day. It seems a small amount but over a year that's 365% improvement. In addition it can highlight more clearly where I am going wrong in the day and where I can start to change things. I have set targets which I expect myself to meet and pie charts which show how my weekly percentages are being affected. It has so far proved quite useful as it has spurred me on to change the percentages. I can also look at how the time I spend working can be affected by things like daily tasks e.g. errands which I run that day. So this can help me not feel as bad when I have not been able to meet targets. However if there is a week where I haven't had much of these tasks I can see that I didn't have an excuse not to do work.
I have also set up a small line graph at the bottom of the spreadsheet which shows me the overall daily improvements more visually. Which I can use to actually see how far I am away from my highest output on another day.
Some people might find that this method is quite sad because its maybe a little bit too organised, but I am motivated by targets and this is something which I feel will help me see, more literally, how
I am developing. It will also give me a sense of achievement when I reach a target or do better than the previous day. Thus training my mind psychologically to change through classical conditioning. Although I'm not sure of its effectiveness if you are aware of it happening.
One other thing which I have been taking advantage of over the holiday is the fact that I am currently in the countryside in Wales. My parents invited me to a cottage that they usually visit to get away from things like work. It has been useful because there is no internet or phone reception here. Or TV. So the only thing I can do is work and go outside and enjoy the good weather. One other benefit of staying here is that I have access to a few public footpaths which go through woodland, gardens and fields. This has given me a great opportunity to take some photos. I have been taking these photos for potential use in later projects. Mostly because I love natural imagery and I think it would be a good idea to produce some stock images of my own for textures and future projects where I may need photos. I think over the summer I should start visiting places where I might be able to get some more imagery, not necessarily natural imagery (maybe industrial) for stock images of my own. I should also maybe start scanning artwork which I have already created or will create to make my own textures. I would to make some paper textures like the ones I have used in my book cover project and on the header for the comic book website.
It has been really nice to get away from the big wide world and relax a bit. Having no internet has definitely been a plus. I should learn some way to get rid of it and be able to work too as it has been quite beneficial.
Also because of the no TV issue I have been able to educate myself a bit better with current cultures and going-ons in the world via a free podcast I downloaded a while ago called TedTalks. It has featured people like Bill Gates and Sarah Kay. It's a base for new ideas and has helped opened my mind a bit more to the world outside my student accommodation walls. I will definitely watch these a bit more instead of keeping them just stored on my iTunes. Hopefully some will influence my work or the way I think about business. I've also slightly (And I stress slightly, I hate windows as an operating system) warmed to Bill Gates through it... who knew?!

22nd April 2011 -

This week before heading back to University I have been putting together the final parts of my blog; including pictures, entries from my pages documents and some other things which I have saved e.g. blogs and websites which I have been looking at and saving as bookmarks. This is something which, admittedly I have been holding off for a while because I just haven't got into gear with it yet.
Other things which I have been spending time with have been things like playing around with photoshop at home, looking at online html and css tutorials for inspiration. I have currently been looking at an interesting site which also talks about comic book style websites. I will be using this as a source for inspiration, however not too much because I want my pages to actually look like comic book pages. The site is: http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/tutorials/complete-websites/create-a-comic-book-themed-web-design-photoshop-to-html-css-part-1/
It looks quite modern so I will be drawing on this to bring my pages up to date with the modern age, reasonably anyway. I have also emailed Phil in order to check whether or not this is ok to do. He has said that it should be ok as it is only another way to learn, as long as I don't copy and paste everything.
I will also be starting my website after the weekend as I have not really started the coding, due to fear of it; in truth.
I have also purchased another book in order to help me with this alongside the html book from the library.

25th February 2011 - 18th March 2011

25th February 2011-
This week I have been looking at how I can better organise my PDP. Currently I have been writing my diary in purely text format. Commenting on where I have progressed and how the events in the week have changed my work. I have also been actively trying to look at areas where I can act to improve my groups' and my own work.
I have been looking at how other people where I live have been presenting their own PDPs and this has inspired me to look at creating a blog.
The best blog site seems to be Blogspot. I have looked up on other various blogs which I go to and have chosen some aspects, such as a background, and produced a header for my blog. I added a photo of myself to this blog header to add a bit of personality. I also hope to compile a list of my favourite blogs for inspiration.

Looking at how easy it is to create an online blog I have also decided that over the summer, when hopefully I will have a bit more time on my hands, I will create a personal blog to run alongside my PDP. This way, for next year's PDP, I can have two blogs which can show not only how I am changing within my course, but in outside life. I can also try to link the two with sources for inspiration and how events in my life and interest can help to inform my artwork. I hope that I can learn to improve the way I work and become more efficient.
This week I have been trying my hardest to try and start to map my ideas down visually as well as in written form. This is mainly because I think I enjoy writing a bit too much and it doesn't really express enough about what is actually going on in my head. I can also be quite technical when it comes to developing my work. So I think my ideas and notes can look quite apathetic. This is another area which I hope to work on.
I began looking at further my ideas. I wanted for my book cover to have a stronger development. At the moment it had remained fairly still. So, on Phil's advice I started afresh. This meant that I would be considering things which were entirely new. Drawing inspiration from elsewhere to ensure that I was exploring new possibilities. I wanted to act as if the first idea had not even crossed my mind. Which was more difficult than I thought.
The first idea came into my head when I was browsing some online blogs. One of the main features of blogs today is that they tend to have am old-fashioned, shabby-chic appearance or genre to them. So things like French newspaper background and vintage adverts pop up quite a bit. These often used to be the source of my art work inspiration during my fine art A level. Somehow I realised that I had lost my way from my own style in search of achieving what others in my class came upon so naturally. This has made me realise that my work is no longer unique.

The idea which I came up with would still have a conceptual feel like my previous pieces. The idea would be looking at the character Cora. I wanted the viewer to perceive her situation in the book and begin to get a perspective on what the book was about. I thought that the best way to think about this would be to think about her as being a bird in a cage. Trapped by social expectations and her marriage. It also reminded me of a poem by my favourite poet Percy Bysshe Shelley called The Cloud (http://www.web-books.com/Classics/Poetry/Anthology/Shelley/Cloud.htm).
Shelley refers to a woman as a;

"Poor captive bird! Who, from thy narrow cage,

Pourest such music, that it might assuage
The rugged hearts of those who prisoned thee,
Were they not deaf to all sweet melody."

This is what pushed my creativity. The romantic movement, of which this poem was a part of, encouraged me to look at certain more old-world styles.
The book cover which came from this turned out to be quite unique. I had the idea of using a silhouette. However due to my lack of ability to use photoshop these were wholly created by changing the paths of typefaces in the shapes which I required. I will learn how to draw my own paths at a later time. Potentially in the website project where I will be creating my own website graphics.
I have been quite proud of how this idea for my book cover has developed and all I need to do is add a typeface. I think I will go for something quite classic and simple as this is something I want to be reflected in the whole cover.
This week I also began looking at researching the book cover project. Much later than I should have done and I know that this is why I have struggled coming up with ideas.
One of the things I decided to look at was how the current UK market was responding to buying books. This meant looking at current distributers of books. As I don't have access to their sales information the only place to find out the best selling books was where their websites had categorised them. I began looking at one of the largest retailers of books; Amazon.co.uk. This was a good website to begin looking at because it sells almost every book you can think of. At a range of prices. This would mean that the range of bestselling books could be drawn from any genre, not just the ones which were available in their stores.
When looking at the books in the bestselling section I was able to identify that most of the books had a fairly dark or powerful colour scheme, with only a few differing. Furthermore I noticed that the books generally put the name of the author as the most prominent text. This was something which I had not really considered before. I also noticed that generally the author text was in all caps. Regardless of genre.
Another website which I found useful was a website called Nielsen BookScan UK(http://www.nielsenbookscan.co.uk/controller.php?page=48). This is a website dedicated to statistics in book selling. I discovered this website by browsing the internet for such statistics and discovered a link on the daily mail website. After following this link I was able to find up to date information on which books were currently selling in the UK in the top ten. I was then able to dissect this into the genre of the book which I was creating the book cover for; fiction. After studying the characteristics of these books I soon found that the covers has similarities, in certain aspects, with the amazon bestselling list.
This research, as well as lectures, has lead me to think about other aspects of the book which need to be looked into. Such as shelf space. My spine will be perhaps the only thing which the consumer will notice. This is something which I regularly experience in my seasonal job at Asda and was definitely something which I wanted to at least think about when designing my cover because this is as important to books as the 'top third' is to magazines.
At some point I intend to look at this further. From this I can improve my design to make it stand out against the shelf. My current idea is particularly good at this aspect as most books in the crime fiction genre on amazon.co.uk seem to be reasonably dark and usually settle within the colour margins of white, black and red. I want to avoid this where possible. I need to ensure that my book doesn't go to far out of the reaches of similar books because it needs to still be recognisable or I won't be creating a feasible cover.
Concerning the website I have created a Facebook group to supplement the lack of communication within the group. As of yet there has not been much use and members have not contributed anything. It is to be hoped that this will change and this will group will become key in the development and progression of our work as a team. If I hadn't at least tried to this then I think I would have failed the group. However if it does work then we can all work towards sharing our ideas and discussing them without leaving anyone out. Whether they are on holiday or ill. Everyone can catch up on discussions, so hopefully there will be no excuse not to contribute.
This week I have been looking again at the story in the book and writing down about how the story timeline appears, picking up key points in the book. I have also been looking at some key sentences which could lead to ideas for a cover. I haven't really explored these as much as I could have done.
The deadline for the book cover and the essay is not very far away and I am beginning to kick things into gear. I have already began some research this week, just some basic notes and websites of importance, for my essay. I have already wrote a few hundred words on this, however I have become stuck with what to write. From experience I have learnt that this is due to a lack of research so this will definitely be a focus for me next week. Hopefully by then I will begin to start writing and thinking about the extract a bit more.
4th March 2011 -
This week I have been preparing the essay research for writing about the national express website and
I have also produced a drawing of the comic book character which I wish to be featured on my website. Some of the other members of my group have done the same and submitted them to the group page.
I have created this drawing by looking at some comic book character tutorials online moreover by referring a little to some books on how to draw at an advanced level for anime style comic books.
This has meant that I have been thinking more about how my website pages might look.
My idea is that I will create a really detailed character who looks like a classic superhero for the front cover then I will condense the basic qualities down into a very simplified character who will be drawn into a simpler style in order for me to produce a comic strip much more easily and efficiently. It will also mean that my website page design will not overkill with too much detail. This leaves room for some creative details elsewhere, whether it be animation or some fancy coding.
One thing I am hoping to do over the next few weeks is finish reading the HTML coding book as I have found it fairly easy to read and I am already half way through it. I want to get myself up to the same level as other members in my group who have done website creation as their Advantage module.
This week I have also been looking at my book cover again. This time I have been playing about with a few more techniques on photoshop as I got an idea in my head that perhaps the silhouettes could be made out of something more interesting like paper, rather than just opaque black. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to do this. When I eventually discovered that I could turn a path into a selection I downloaded some old fashioned paper textures which included writing on them. I figured that this would link well with the fact that the book is supposed to be written by the fictional character of Frank. It also works quite well if the silhouette is Cora. Therefore the silhouette would then be a metaphor for the reader building her character from the words of the Frank. She would literally be made from his words. Which in the story, is really the only way she manages to exist at all. He passes on the story of her existence and this is the whole reasoning behind the book. So this would be quite an appropriate angle to take on the book cover.
Once I had cut out the silhouette I tried a number of things to play about with how my final book cover might look. Composition is something which I am struggling with on this project because I simply can't decide which ideas to take and which ideas to scrap completely.
When I spoke to Tom Fitzmaurice about this problem he gave me some feedback and suggested about maybe balancing the elements on the page by adding a silhouette on the back. For this I drew out the outline of a woman running free. I figured that this would contrast well with the birdcage on the front. As it is like seeing the girl finally breaking free of the bonds, giving a small insight into where the story might lead when the reader looks to the back of the book.
Generally when I asked friends, particularly because I wanted to see how a normal person (who was not graphically focused) would react to the overall appearance of the book, about what they thought of this cover design it was well received. However one thing which I didn't really do was ask enough questions. I should have really prepared more for the feedback, perhaps through a survey of how well they feel it conveyed the story, what they took from it etcetera. This is something which I plan to do in future where I feel that such an audience will be required for comments.
Overall I am quite proud of the response which I have received and I look forward to seeing how my lecturer will respond to it next week. This is something which I feel I am not progressing enough with. I need to be coming in more and socialising with people in the studio as ultimately it is affecting my work because you need a response to get a good grounding on your ideas. This is something which I failed on in the typography module.
Looking at my essay, I have continued further research and made a few more notes. Although I am only just approaching half way through the essay, I feel that I am making a good progression. I am managing to find some interesting points to make. I am however discovering that my writing capabilities have definitely changed since I was doing my English Literature A level. it think this is because there is nowhere near the amount of written work required on the degree course in comparison so therefore I am out of practice. I should maybe put in a bit more effort to write some personal things, perhaps poems or something. Anything to keep my writing skills in play.
This is one of the reasons why I want to keep a personal blog for my own life and for my development through university. I do really enjoy writing and I should have maybe been putting in a bit more of my time into maintaining it, not just for personal reasons but for more practical things like essays and dissertations which I will need to write for this course. At the moment by skills have noticeably degraded, and it is beginning to show when I am having difficulty in writing as much at the same rates as used to in sixth form. I know that I am capable, I just need to motivate myself more. I need to find something which will motivate me to do these kind of things which will inevitably benefit me in the time to come.
11th March 2011 -
This week I have been looking at my essay a bit more, as I have been concerned that my writing skills are no longer as strong. It is mostly because I am worried that they have changed significantly because I can only write a few hundred words before I come to a stand still.
I have found this week that this may be down to the fact that I have not been thinking enough before writing my essay and may have dived in too soon. So I have took some time to sit down, with screen prints in my hands of the things I need, and my notes. I made sure that I was away from my computer and distractions. I made a promise to myself that I would sit for 45 minutes (which is meant to be the the upmost amount of time for continued concentration) and get ideas out of my head and onto paper. This was something which I have done in the past for my English Literature A level, by going through poems or sonnets, book and plays and really getting to know what I am talking about. Then when I come across something that needs to be mentioned or a pivotal idea I write them down. By doing this I feel I am ready to start writing.
One thing which I wanted to do first was begin setting down the foundation for my essay, the layout. As this was supposed to be in the style of a magazine I went to the library in the hope of finding some books which may be able to offer some educated guidance on this issue. After browsing too many books I found one which definitely helped with this and photocopied the pages which I found most important. One of these pages featured a layout guideline idea. It suggested that I divide the page into equal, vertical columns of twelve and align certain elements, whether it be images, text or other. This helped a lot and I was surprised to see how easily it did the composition for me.
I downloaded an appropriate background from a royalty free stock image website for the background. I wanted the overall appearance of the piece to be simplistic, to reflect the words of Beatrice Warde. I then carried this through the rest of the theme by letting the background live in its own beauty. I felt that I succeeded in this by keeping the rest of the article fairly monochromatic, minus a few reference images. I also had a specific typeface in my head which I knew would complement all the elements whilst bringing in a retro edge. This was called "impact label" and "impact label reversed". They act to appear like old label from labeling machines where the tape was punched into by the appropriate letter, leaving an embossed letter behind which could then be stuck onto any surface. I discovered this typeface on dafont.com. This font, coupled with the black blocky shapes behind the text gave a simplistic but slightly edgy look. Just what I wanted to achieve.
Now that I have the layout ready for my essay, and most of the images which I will need, I fee ready to finish my essay; and under slightly less pressure for time.
Next week I will definitely be coming in to talk to Phil about my current ideas for the book cover. I have compiled a photoshop file with multiple layers so that I can show him multiple combinations of ideas and getting a better range of comments from him. I have also thrown in a royalty free image from the same stock image website where I got the background for my essay. This image has a slight silhouette feel to it, where a woman is gazing out of the window. It runs alongside some of the ideas which I have already produced. However one thingI don't like about stock images is that I feel they are a bit too much "cut-and-stick" without enough personal touch. So it is unusual for me to experiment with something like this. But for now it will do for exhibiting an idea.
As for the website it has, once again, took a position on the back burner; hopefully not for long. This is mainly because I have got in a bit of panic, not sure if I need to yet, about the current book and essay project being due in in a few weeks. However I have been checking in on the group page and it seems that there is not much contribution from other people in the group. Hopefully this means that I am not the only one concentrating on this. I really need to be more organised and pay attention to my Gantt chart more.
18th March 2011 -
This week I have been progressing with the production of my essay and my book cover with the deadline fast approaching.
To progress my ideas I have met with Phil in the studio to discuss the photoshop file which I produced last week for an opinion.
Phil’s, Tom Fitzmaurice’s and Paul Harris’ advice have been helpful in getting a better grounding for what kind of work I need to do to make my ideas more accessible to the target audience. I think I have tried to be too different to the crime fiction genre of books and this had lead me astray. Although the book cover I have designed and the options I have given, on the photoshop file, were received well and were good designs I have found that the consensus is that they are too feminine due to the style I have gone for. One of the ways, which Phil suggested, to rectify this would be to add darker element. Perhaps by adding a silhouette of one character being killed form the murder scene. This would juxtapose with the feminine style of the design and make it more accessible to a wider audience.
When looking at the royalty free photo which I had added to the file; Phil liked the idea. Although he did agree that it did lack personal touch when I hadn’t produced the photo myself. This was exactly what I had predicted. Therefore he suggested that I take the scene in the photo and replicate it in my own photo, so therefore it would still influence my work, except it would be more personal and less “cut-and-stick”.
As for the essay, I have managed to finish that this week. This will hopefully mean that I can spend the rest of next week on my book cover with less worry about the deadline. I know I can finish my book cover and get it to a final piece by this time.
The essay was quite a push for me as I have not really written one in a while. However with a good bit of research I was able to produce quite a good discussion of the different points. I definitely think that learning to write a blog could help me get back into the swing of writing regularly and prepare me for writing a dissertation in the final year of study.
I have also been reading more of the html coding book which I got from the library. I have got through almost all of it and I am getting quite used to how it works. Hopefully I can see this book as a reference guide for when I am creating my website pages. I definitely need to get a move on with creating the artwork for my website.
I am a bit nervous about the approaching deadline but I am pretty sure I can make it well. I have been preparing my lecture notes and have been putting some of my notes from my smaller sketchbook into my A3 sketchbook, which I will hand in.
The guidance from going in to the studio with my work has spurred me on as I know that I am at least heading in the correct direction and I am confident that I will be able to create solutions to the problems which have been highlighted. The work which I am currently producing looks much better informed than the earlier ideas so I can only hope that this means my final idea will look even more improved with the input I have had this time around on my work. My ideas have had much more influence from others this time around and I can see the benefits of this.
With regard to the photo which I need to take I will be taking this over the weekend. I think the photo will most likely be a photo of myself, as I resemble the description of the character of Cora.
Once I have taken this photo I will try to include some of the elements of my current ideas and build this around the photo. If this works then this will most likely be my final idea, if not I will look at the silhouettes again, and making them become the darker element of the cover.

28th January 2011 - 18th February 2011

28th January 2011 -
After spending over two weeks reading the book I felt much more ready to begin looking at ideas for the book cover. However I had not yet came up with any well grounded ideas.
The book was a reasonable read and because of my background with an English Literature A level I was able to judge its content quite well, in relation to other books which I have read; old and new. This meant that I could have a better idea of what was going on in the author's mind at the time and why he perhaps decided to attend focus on certain aspects whilst guiding away from others. It was this kind of detail that I wanted to notice this week. I hope that this is what will make my ideas unique from other members in the class as the last thing I want is for my work to become cliche and blend in with other books sharing its shelf space.
One of the most important things I wanted to look at in regards to the book was the intriguing beginnings where the protagonist meets his love.
I believe that the moments in the beginning are of the most important for drawing ideas from as this is really what the book cover should begin to tell the viewer. The idea is that the cover gives a short insight into where things might lead, but still leave a little bit of interest.
Drawing on the above factors I decided that I would have good think and a re-read of the initial chapters. I felt that between the second and third chapters would be the best place to pay attention to where the author still managed to maintain mystery. I underline the parts which I felt were key to building the narrative.
Initially though, I have struggled to put pen to paper and have felt like I have forced myself to come up with ideas. This in turn has meant that the ideas which I have produced have been limited and have not really progressed themselves.
Once re-reading the first initial chapters of the book I came up with an idea regarding the neon light for the diner. The idea was something which came into my head upon looking at a particular page in The Computer Arts book of Inspiration, Volume II. In this book, on page 67, I came across a T-shirt design by Trochut. His website shows some further designs of this series: http://www.alextrochut.com/#/works/lorem-ipsum
The design which inspired me had actually came from a T-shirt design. I loved how the letters all connected, as they were supposed to look as if they had been written in mustard and tomato ketchup. My only worry has been that I am not as experienced as other people in my class at photoshop. it is a skill which I have not yet attained. This is since I have only recently acquired the program, due to a lack of funding, and a fear of it being too difficult for me to use.
The way in which I overcame this was by telling myself that I would have to come up with an alternative idea to produce the same idea; without a computer. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Mistakes can lead to a more developed final piece. It could also bring out my uniqueness.
As you will have been able to see in my sketchbook, I have produced a stencil of the title, where the letters and words have been linked as if they were part of a neon sign. This was one of the first things which I produced. It is the only other way in which I believe I can manually link the words and produce something like a print where they would all be linked. After spending cumulative hours on this piece I decided to begin trying to work on the same thing but in photoshop.
Initially I wasn't very sure about altering shapes, or even drawing them and it took me some time to realise that photoshop would not help me alter typeface shapes. I opened up InDesign and typed the text I wanted, in the typeface I had chosen: Santa Fe LET.
Once I had played around enough, which took me late into the night, I had managed to figure out how to change the letters into paths, select those paths and delete them. It took me another hour or so to learn how to use the pen tool to join path ends of different letters. It took me another half an hour to learn how to make the points on the path more flexible. I am still not entirely sure what these are called.
Currently I only have this shape which I have created and I will be working on it over the weekend in photoshop to make it appear more like a neon sign. Potentially figuring out how to colour it in photoshop and how to make it glow.
My website development has been currently been put on the back burner of all the work because I feel that developing my book cover has become a priority. This is mostly because of my lack of ability to create sufficient ideas and my incapabilities to explore these as quickly using photoshop.
I have also returned to University with a graphics tablet which has meant that I have also been learning how to use this along with photoshop. I want to ensure that I am able to get plenty of key skills learnt over the next few months. Especially with the website project. I want to be able to make my page quite visual. Photoshop will not be a key element in producing this, but enhancing my style and giving me a wider range of skills to work with. It will hopefully enable me to develop my drawing ability as this is usually limited by its limited reproduction. Being able to change a drawing and replicate in a variety of contexts will help me to progress ideas more efficiently. This is why I think that Photoshop skills will enhance rather than obstruct my more practical skills. I can then take what I produce and further develop it by hand e.g. prints, painting on top of it and being able to destroy it a bit (experimentally of course). The computer will hopefully aid me in the way of taking away some of the risk of destroying a piece. It will allow me to take one piece and look at it in multiple medias. Allowing me to be more experimental and give myself more freedom creatively.
4th February 2011 -
This week I have been looking at developing my neon light idea for the book cover. I have been further developing my photoshop skills alongside this and learning how to use my new graphics tablet in conjunction with the program.
I have learnt quite a lot about photoshop recently as I have been using it quite a bit since last weekend.
I used the path which I created using the typeface for the title of the book which I altered last week in InDesign, another program which I am hoping I will become more familiar with and utilise with other projects. Potentially I want to be able to use the program to develop my own typeface at some point. This is one of my personal targets.
Over the weekend I have learnt how to paint using my graphics tablet and photoshop. I transferred the path from InDesign into photoshop and selected the inside of it using the magic wand. I discovered this as a means of not going outside the lines and keeping them crisp. It also means that it takes significantly less effort to paint the piece and I can go back and concentrate on things like direction of light, 3d effects and shadowing. First of all I filled the lettering in with a crimson shade. I created a gradient by shading the tops of the lettering with the colour but slightly light and then shaded the bottoms of the letters with a darker colour. This acted as a basic of colour which I could work into to create a neon glow. I then drew a white, slightly translucent and feathered line down the centers of each line of the letters. Breaking at points where I thought a new line of glass may begin the other letters. This created a good effect. It was something I saw as a child on some art program where they were giving advice on how to draw neon lights. The only difference was that they had used chalks on black paper. Then they used a correction pen down the center of the lines of the words. They then pushed and blew the chalk outwards to make it appear like it was glowing. I tried to apply this memory to photoshop. Once I had created this effect I then used an outer glow to complete the look and a smooth inner bevel to further the shading which I had already applied in the painting.
I have been quite proud of what I have developed this week and how I have progressed my skills using photoshop. No matter how small they have been. I can use these skills again in later work. I feel more confident that I can go and use photoshop to further explore and enhance my work. Especially as it is so replicatable.
This week I have also progressed this idea for the front cover of the book.
As the neon light for the title is something which I have worked quite hard on I wanted it to stand out on the cover. This means that I need to keep the background relatively simple whilst also correlating it with other parts of the book. I decided that I should use darker colours, due to the crime/mystery/romance genre of the book. I also had an idea that due to the UK market, my given audience, it would be great to have some of the patriotic colours in the cover. So red and blue with tones of black and white seemed like a good option.
When it came to creating the background for my book cover I have considered the plot line heavily. I wanted the cover to seem intriguing and take from multiple aspects of the book.
I started with a paper, textured background gained from the deviant art website. I then altered the hue, brightness and contrast to create a dark blue texture which could not be defined as one specific thing. I then used the brush to paint some shadows onto the  texture. The shadow is deliberately difficult to make out. It is supposed to be so that it represents different parts of the story and that depending on how much you have read it should change your view on what the shadow is of. So initially you might say that the shadow looks like a man. This could be representative of when the main character is waiting for Cora to murder to Greek.
Towards the end of the book you might see the shadow as the blood running down the windscreen of the car and the moonlight bringing its shadow out on the car seat inside. By the time you have finished reading you might see the shadow as prison bars on the wall or floor of the prison from which Frank writes his story.
Once I developed this cover I then brought it in for a feedback session in the studio. The comments which I received has helped me look at my idea in less isolation, which is what I have done in previous projects and I have certainly came around to the idea of feeding off other peoples' perspectives of my work.
One thing which came out the response was that the other members of my class felt that the cover had a bit of an 80's feel to it. I felt this may have been because of the pinkish tone to the neon sign contrasting with the blues in the background. They also said that the cover was a bit vague about the subject matter.
This has highlighted a few problems which I fear I may not have noticed had I not bothered with getting much feedback. It has shown me that I have not given enough away with relation to the plot line and have perhaps been over-mysterious.
When talking to Phil after the session I was able to gain some other opinion on the cover. This was that he thought perhaps there also needs to be some attention to the textured background because the information which I was attempting to convey was distracted away from by the neon light title. He thought that perhaps I should take the title away from the front cover completely and leave the small author text on the bottom. This would mean that I would be able to still maintain a bit of intrigue whilst also making the book cover a bit unique. To still keep the neon sign that I had created I would simply move it to the back left corner of the cover where it would gain more effect on its own.
Over the last few days I have been developing this into a full book cover and it has worked reasonably well. However I am beginning to doubt whether this book cover will be successful or not because I haven't really done much research on it. So once I have finished exploring it and making a few changes I have decided that I will do a bit more research and see whether that brings any inspiration.
Concerning the website I have created a Facebook group in order for my group to communicate better because I feel that no one is really progressing forward together and that we are all living in our own little worlds (evidence of this is seen right, please click the image for a closer view). I have decided to do this because a friend on another course has found this method useful for his own group work. It is also bound to be effective as Facebook is one of the main distractions of our age group so people will be able to regularly check and update the group at the click of a button.
Another reason for this is that I feel that when we have had group meeting that other members of the group are making decisions without involving or informing the rest of the group. This worries me because it is meant to be a group website and I want to have a part in it. As do other members. This just is not something which can be accepted if we have been expected to communicate and create things as a team. So I feel that a Facebook group would be ideal for progressing as group without having to be the person doing all the running around and relying on people to pass on messages. It also means that any discussions, decisions or ideas are recorded. Meaning there is less room for mistakes and the origins of ideas can be traced easily. It is to be hoped that this will benefit all of us and we can start to learn how to work in teams; as this is something which we have to deal with in industry on a daily basis.
11th February 2011 -
In the interest of furthering my studies I have invested in some more graphic design books online as I feel that my lack of inspiration has been due to a lack of research and common reading in the field which I am hoping to be employed in for later life. This is something which I feel I have neglected since I came to University and it is something which I want to resolve sooner rather than later.
I am also currently looking into a work placement over the summer for which I need to compile a portfolio. This will hopefully enable me to get some experience behind myself before entering into any potential careers. It will also provide me with better job prospects.
With the deadline for the book cover approaching swiftly, only six weeks away, I have moved significantly forward with my ideas. Since doing my research on current bestsellers I have gotten a better idea of the current UK consumer market and feel that I have let myself down by not doing this sooner as the lack of this research has certainly affected my ideas.
Since doing the research I have found it easier to think about how I should represent the story which I have been presented with. I have also frequently spent a few passing hours of boredom sifting through an online book cover archive. This has benefitted me quite well as I am building on my current foundation of knowledge (as small as it was) on how a book cover should appear. Although this may give me some biased views on what I should create it will also ensure that I stay close to my genre of book.
One of things which I have been trying to do this week is play around with different ideas. I have developed a basic backdrop for a book cover however all I need is the perfect image to complement it. I have used a textured background featuring some natural scenes (Something which I hope to create myself for later projects, to give my work a bit more of my own style). I have then used a coffee cup stain, gained as a brush through deviant art (another thing which I intend to create myself at some point, perhaps this summer coming). This, I feel, brings some element of the story back to the cover.
This background is complemented by my choice of typeface (Adobe Caslon Pro, italic) which is fairly simplistic but adds an educated and traditional element (complementing the era of the novel) because it is a serif font. This typeface does not distract too much from the rest of the cover, leaving room for some relative detail in other aspects.
One thing which I have found myself chasing is an idea to produce a silhouette, or multiple silhouettes. But I can't really decide what to create silhouettes of. So at the moment I am just following ideas which flow into my mind and run with them. Currently I have created a silhouette of Cora in a bird cage, as mentioned last week. I have also came up with another creation which is a silhouette of a woman holding a heart. She has a dress which drapes down from her arms. It is meant to be a classical pose. I had the image of a Greek goddess statue in my head, maybe because that's how I imagined the (protagonist? I'm not sure if he really is one... too naughty to be one. And maybe he failed just slightly on the 'saving' front) Frank to have seen her. Realising this thought process now I am beginning to think that this should really be written down in my sketchbooks. I also thought it might be a good contrast to have the shape of her own heart cut out of her silhouette. Leaving the idea open to a personal interpretation of her conflicted character.
It is to be hoped that I will be able to progress these silhouettes into something a bit more interesting, maybe something which doesn't wander too far away from the subject.
I think that next week I need to bring some more focus onto the actual website as I have been neglecting it for a bit. I feel kind of sad for that project because it hasn't really had a lot of love lately.
The Facebook group has worked out reasonably well and I think that it is definitely going to do what I thought it would. There have been images submitted about ideas and those images have had discussions on them (Click on left image to enlarge example of this). We are able to talk about current ideas and everyone seems a bit more confident to speak from behind their laptops. Definitely more than we have ever discussed in person. Especially with the few meetings which we have actually managed to attend with the entire group present.
The group has definitely became more of a positive experience and I do feel a lot more pushed to get some work done if I am totally honest (who really feels like doing work when you don't see anyone else doing any?). It is great to see everyone starting to be on the same page with their work and now we can start pushing everyone into action with the group. I can see this progressing now.
Other than that there hasn't really been a lot to focus on this week. One thing I hope to do next week or in a reasonable amount of time is to discuss my progressions in my work with some other people in the studio as I would definitely like some comments on the direction I'm heading in with my new book cover designs.
18th February 2011 -
This week I have been looking more closely at the website as I have neglected this quite a bit without meaning to. This is probably because the website has a deadline which is quite far away and therefore I have struggled to make myself realise that the work needs to progress. This is something which I usually do on projects and it doesn't do me any good. I sometimes end up rushing the end product. It is definitely an area where I need to start improving. I need to start looking closely at how much work I am actually doing, instead of coming up with reasons why I'm not getting it done.
One of the reasons I have found reason to progress with the website is that since the beginning of the Facebook group I have created people have been more keen to submit work to the other members of the group and I feel that am not contributing enough as I should be.
I am glad that this is spurring me on a bit though. Its definitely helping me see where I am in comparison to where other people are progressing. I always find that a bit of competition actually improves my quality and efficiency of my work. It is to be hoped that I will start to feel the pressure and get going on this project.
The HTML tutorials have not really been as helpful as I thought and therefore I have been looking at a library book which acts as a general reference. I am progressing much quicker than with the lessons and learning a lot more. This is mostly because I am much more used to getting my information from reading. This is the way in which I learn the most. Plus the lessons don't really get in the deep end quick enough. I like a challenge and I've already done visual basic coding for a self-created database system in the past so I feel ready to dive in with this. It currently appears easier than visual basics so I'm not too worried.
A few weeks ago we had a meeting between our group which I found difficult to chew. Two of the girls in our group had turned up, after weeks of very little communication with the group, and showed the group their designs (I'm not too sure who had created what) for the layout and header of the website. This had angered me a little bit because it was a complete surprise to the rest of us. We hadn't seen any prior work to this and we hadn't prepared any work to at least discuss other options because we weren't warned that this was coming up. One of the girls had already done some HTML coding for most of the home page. So obviously one of my main inquiries was where the individual input goes for each of our pages if this was to be carried through as the fluent website element. My answer was that she had already flatten the header image, was unaware of the typeface used and that the individual space would go below the header. Below the header was a 'torn page' background element. Although I felt that the work on the header was great, and clearly someone was talented, it angered me that there had been so little communication. The lack of this meant that the rest of the group looked inadequate, which was not the case. The method of communication is what had broken down.
To rectify this issue I have created the Facebook page which has promptly changed the face of our groups interactions.
This week, as I have been working on the website, I have decided to now bring in my own input for the group header and website layout. I expect that at this stage decisions have already been made about what we will be pushing on with. So once the group meeting has been organised I will be prepared for all of my ideas to be thrown out completely. However I feel that even if they are, that they can at least influence the direction which we choose to progress in on this project.
One of the things which I have been looking at is my boyfriend's collection of comic books. As discussed recently on the Facebook group, we are currently looking at constructivism and comic book themes for our website as we feel that these are powerful and energetic colours, reflecting the "atmosphere" produced by the website pitch video we have made. These two themes, as recorded on the Facebook group, are my ideas. I am a bit disappointed that they were challenged as not being applicable at first, mostly because the feedback on these ideas was not constructive. Members of the group did not suggest options to solve the problems that they had, they just knocked back the solutions I came up with unconstructively. Then, confusingly, accepted them (Please click on the image on the right to see a larger copy of the example of discussions).
Continuing on the theme of the website I have thus created some website elements (such as the header above) and page layout ideas based on the comic books which I have borrowed. Referring to these during creation I was able to create something which I believed to be accurate of what a comic book should look like as a web page.
On presenting these ideas I have been surprised at the actual response. This was because my ideas were accepted in replacement of the two girls' designs. They thought that my creations were good, which was also a surprise because I'm not as experienced at photoshop as members like Zoe. Her work looks really good and I was worried that she might notice that I was new at photoshop. I am glad though, because ultimately this means I have progressed following my learning ot the program for the book cover project.
Now a lot of the website header is my input. I have passed on the file I created, unflattened, so that each member can create their own flare to it, changing the colour, background textures and the logo which I produced for the main page.
The logo which I created was produced entirely on photoshop using my graphics tablet. It was experimental, based on the logo found on issues 100 - 149, and came out quite well. I drew it without any prior thought, other than having a basic idea of what I wanted to draw, and drew it using my own hand as guidance. It is a simple vector image based on what I had interpreted from the comic books I had to hand, Judge Dredd. I am proud of what I have accomplished.
I hope that I will manage to maintain my input and progress my ideas appropriately.
In the meeting we were able to discuss where we all were on the project and to visualise how it all might come together. It was much better talking to the members of the group face to face. We all came up with aims for each other to give ourselves targets to meet.
Some of these aims were things such as creating our own comic book characters, in our own image, which would progress through each page like a story. Adding an exciting visual element for the user. This means that we would be focussing more on the visual content than the text boundaries. It means that we will have a good balance across the entire website. Maintaining the end users' attention throughout.
We have also agreed that we will be featuring all of our characters on the home page, to unite each of the sections of the website.
As for the book cover I have not really looked at it too much this week and I am hoping that I can catch up on it at a later stage when I feel that I have furthered my development of my pages on the website.

This week I began looking at the robot project. On entry into the studio I managed to join a new group. The members of my team are;
  • Megan Roy
  • Zoe Shackleton
  • Paul Harris
As a group we decided this week that we would look at the arms as this was a major part that had not been taken by the remainder of our group. We also thought that it would be quite interesting to look at this, as a mechanism, and it would give us reasonable room for creativity.
Our group has lacked the same time scale as the rest of the group as we have all only began looking at the project this week. However this has meant that things have happened quite quickly and I enjoy having a bit of a challenge with my work.
Megan and I quickly came up with some ideas on the Monday afternoon by having a brief research through some x-rays or arms. We got a good idea of how the natural mechanism works. We decided that using the bones in our project would give it quite an interesting, and maybe slightly morbid, effect. We decided to make the bones out of foam and drafted them from images we found on the internet.
Throughout the remainder of the week we spent the time cutting and sanding down the main bone structures which were the humerus, the radius and ulna. Once we felt that this was done we began looking at how they might fit together and how we could fashion a pulley system to replicate the movements of the triceps and bicep.
Paul and I went to a DIY store to collect some hooks to hold the thread. We did initially want to use wire on the pulley system but after testing it we discovered that we couldn’t really find the flexibility in any wires that wouldn’t cause wear and tear and end up snapping the wire after a few uses. I had some wool left at home which I had been saving for some kind of knitting project. I brought this in for us to use and it gave us the flexibility that we needed. This ball of wool was later used as part of the head.
Once we had all the parts we decided to paint the bones using emulsion paint. This would act as a base for the spray paint we intended to use. To make the bones seem more futuristic and robotic we decided to use metallic silver spray paint. This gave quite a good effect once we added the hooks and wool. We then wound around some metal for further effect.
After we had made our part of the robot we then had to correlate our arms with other groups such as the hands and the ribs group. We decided to get some duct tape to connect the hands to the arms. This connection was inspired by the carpal tunnel. We then connected the humerus to the rib cage by using some available wire coat hangers which turned out to be the perfect shape and size. I do however feel that there could have been more effort in the overall graphic design group when it came to connecting all the body parts. It seemed a bit too on-the-spot. Next time I think that if we make more effort to communicate, throughout the development of the parts, there will be less time spent merging the different sizes and shapes. We should have had a group discussion of what parts were to be made and how these would work together. For example, there was no group doing the skull, which could have benefitted the merging of the eyes, ears, mouth and brain group.

Overall I think this part of the project went quite well. There were a few initial difficulties in communicating within our group (possibly due to the shortened time scale). I think in the next stage of the project, the group website, I will put a bit more effort into communicating with the rest of the group.

This week I began putting some more focus on my letterbox part of the Typography project. When I came into university, at the beginning of the week, I discovered that Paul Harris had been looking at the same story as I was planning to; The engagement of Prince William. I decided that I would change my news story. The story which I decided to take on was Paris Hilton doing community service as I felt that this would be the most beneficial to my personal style of working. I like to work with something that I can take a lot from and Paris Hilton is always surrounded by controversy. This story would also give me the opportunity to work with some more metaphorical and conceptual imagery as there are conflicting views and opinions behind her lifestyle.
I began writing down some of the ideas and made sure that I didn’t wander to far away from the project brief by adding more solid and factual elements like the shades and jewelry she was wearing. Which was the main focus of the story. I didn’t want to wander to far away from the brief.
I also took a look at the typographical piece of this module. The text did seem quite daunting. There are many complex metaphors and extended metaphors in the text and I’ve been quite worried how I can simplify some of it with so much going on. I have however sat down and had a really detailed look into it and decoded some of the things I didn’t fully understand. This gave me a better idea of what sort of angles I could take with it. I might look more into romantic poetry, especially with the references to the smell of opium. The reason I thought that this might be a good angle was because Romantic poetry often refers to situations in a very metaphorical light. The poets in the Romantic movement usually look beyond the obvious and everyday. Which is why the sense of smell is quite unique because it looks at the things we normally don’t take notice of in our everyday lives.
This week I have also been looking at improving my awareness of deadlines and therefore have made my own little Gantt chart to make things a bit more obvious to myself. This is something which I previously used in my ICT A level.

This week the rest of the class handed in the letterbox and an exercise in style work for marking. I stayed behind with some others in the class after to walk around and look at some of the work which others had submitted. There was some really inspirational work and it made me feel a bit more confident about my own so far.
I spent much of this week producing parts of my box. Three sides have been put together so far. I have bought some polyfiller for some of the outside sides of the box and to further fuse the sides of the box to give it more strength. I wanted to make a brick wall, on the outside, which matched the one Paris Hilton was painting in the news stories. I did this by smoothing over a thin layer and using the rough side of a sponge to give it a stone texture. Then I dragged in some lines to outline the bricks. I then painted over this, in emulsion, with the colour used in the photos. I then used the emulsion as a base for creating emulsion transfers of some of the news of the world article I had I managed to find plenty of photos and references to the same stories by going out and buying cliche magazines like Heat. It pained me to buy them but I really needed them for research and to use in my project. I wanted to cover some of the walls inside with articles about Paris so that it was like the wax carving of her was entombed with them. What was interesting though was when I found that one magazine, which I will include inside the box, was actually praising her. They literally referred to her in a heroic light.
Other things which I intend to add to the piece is some old negatives form a camera. I thought it might be interesting to make a window into the box with the negative. So that the viewer can grasp the idea that the real issues are manipulated and difficult to see through the eyes of the media.
The main feature of the piece is the wax carving of Paris Hilton, pulling away from or being sucked or maybe even becoming part of the media. I thought it might be better to leave this decision to the viewer to draw their own conclusions. Either way I wanted the image to look unnatural so the choice to use wax seemed quite certain. I have never worked with wax or 3D modelling before so it took a few attempts to get the face so that it was recognisable, especially on such a small scale. The overall effect of the main feature, was that it creates an eery and aberrant atmosphere. I hope to enhance this by using a juxtaposition between grungy textures and indulgent jewelry.

This week I began to take a brief look at the sort of thing that might be part of the website. I know what kind of layout I will probably be using but I think I need to spend a bit more time looking into more contexts of the arms over the holidays. I am especially worried about the HTML coding as I’m unfamiliar with this and would be far more at home creating the website on dreamweaver. When I get back to University I will be going to the library to get a book which I can look at to browse over some of the basics. I have quite a few ideas but I’m worried they might not be properly developed with the restrictions of the HTML coding. I hope that it won’t be as difficult as visual basics, which I used for my A Level I.T. project.
I also handed in my project earlier than the extended deadline which I was given. I chose to do this because after seeing what some of the other members of my class had produced I felt confident in my box. There were some quite interesting ideas and interpretations of news stories. I felt that we should have been given a bit more of an opportunity to explain our designs though. I feel that they might be better interpreted than on their own merit because then it gives us a better amount of leverage for subtlety.
I think I probably have done the best on the box because this is what I spent the majority of my time developing, and mostly because this is what I had the most fun experimenting with and exploring my personal style of working.
I am almost as proud of my typographical part of this project. I found the actual translation of the piece quite difficult because there were a large amount of things going on. There were many metaphors and concepts and it was difficult to create the simplistic piece which I wanted. I tried to encapsulate some of the complexity of the piece by placing it on a par with romantic poetry. I felt this was most appropriate because it would allow the reader to look at the piece in a new light by bringing them closer to consideration of each individual line and its numerous meanings.
I found the restriction to a monochromatic colour scheme easy to stick to but I did struggle with having to come up with a decent idea that doesn’t involve images. I fear that I may have restricted my creative flow by keeping myself somewhat isolated from the rest of the group over the previous weeks. This means that my ideas have been too focused and not really open to being pulled in different directions. I think I can probably improve on this by taking my idea out on context and into the studio more.

This week we received our marks for the work which we handed in before the holidays. I was quite disappointed with my mark. I felt that I deserved a better grade because I had worked hard on my pieces, however I will reserve judgement until I receive the feedback.
The mark has definitely affected the way in which I see my work because I was perhaps a little bit too complacent when handing it in. However I’m not sure whether this is just taking pride in my work. Something to consider in future.
When I was discussing my work with one of the members of the class, Tom Fitzmaurice, he let me have a little feedback, something which I lacked on creating the piece. He thought it had been badly presented and gave me some pointers on how to improve this next e.g. by not having a white edge around the typographical piece by printing it onto A3 and then cutting it out to A4 size. This was something I hadn't really thought about before.
This week we received our next brief, design in context. This consisted of an essay, which I had been hoping to receive for quite a while now as I love writing, and a book cover design.
On receiving the book cover design brief I went out to town the next day and after scouting around several Waterstones’ book shops I was able to salvage one of the last copies which had not been snapped up by someone else on my course.
I began reading the book this week and have managed to make quite a reasonable progression. One of the disappointing things was how quickly the story moved along without allowing time to build up scenery and characters. This meant that it would be quite difficult to use these as a focus for the book cover. After all, it would be quite difficult to show the blossoming of a romance when there was practically no build up to the first moment of passion. This was disheartening as I had hoped to take elements from the beginning of the book as I feel that these are the best parts to draw from. You can show an element of the story where effectively everything gets in to motion whilst also tantalizing any passers-by with interesting elements of the book e.g. a suspicious gaze across the room between characters or the first touch of hands.

After reading a bit more of the book this week I have mostly been able to come up with un-original ideas which involve speckles of blood. Mostly. I have been reluctant to commit these to paper as they will not be relevant to my final piece. I want to be subtle with my work and draw on simplicity if I can.
The book was ultimately something which I would not normally read in my spare time. The whole storyline was more or less predictable and didn’t give me much analytical detail to work with. I suppose this will pay off if I’m expecting to be simplistic anyway. Before I began producing a cover for the book I decided that I wanted to know about the actual content. This should give me some guidance on what sort of genre to research and what sort of books I would have usually been competing against.
But enough about the content of the book. My general idea is to draw on key moments in the book. Or even to draw on multiple moments. Perhaps something conceptual so that multiple meanings can be taken from it or so that reader can see it from different perspectives throughout the book.
This week I have also been preparing and doing my group video pitch for the website. As there has been a lack of communication I decided to just with my own ideas and pitch exactly what I hoped to create in my website. To test my confidence levels and see how I could deal with presenting work I decided to record myself talking about my website ideas and add a few images.
The video initially went terribly. I couldn’t get my words out and I was stuttering and falling over myself. So I invited a friend, who is familiar with theatre, to help me.
You may well ask why I look like I have just finished laughing in some parts of this video. This is because my friend thought I needed to smile more, and achieved this by saying various rude phrases moments before pressing record. This helped a lot and I managed to relax a bit more and suddenly I found myself being to speak a little bit easier. One thing I didn’t notice until I had finished recording was that the cheerful nervousness caused me to swing my legs on the chair, creating a rather embarrassing appearance of me shimmying towards the camera. However I thought this was quite funny so decided it would be better to keep it in. Furthermore it took me a lot of courage to get to just saying the words when facing a rather daunting camera.
Overall, when I had completed the video I felt like I had achieved quite a lot, as I can be quite a shy person. I enjoyed the challenge of making the video a bit more personal.
When we met to fuse the parts of the pitch it did fit together quite well despite the fact that we hadn’t spoken much. It received good feedback and one of things which we had all picked up on was that people got the impression that our website had quite an energetic feel to it.
I soon realised that mine was on a par with other groups’ pitches once we began watching the videos. This made me feel much better and I was quite proud. Despite going red when my face came up on the screen.

The video featured here is an unedited part which I filmed, just so you can see the nervousness and drink every time I shimmy forward... it's terrible. I know.

You may also notice that due to the bad sound quality of the video, I have a slight lisp. Yay. ¬_¬
